How to Track Your Workouts as a Beginner

A workout log doesn't need dozens of metrics. When you're starting out, a small amount of consistent information is much more useful than a complicated system you stop using.

Record the exercise

Write down what movement you performed. Consistent exercise names make it much easier to compare the same movement across different workouts.

Record sets, reps, and weight

For resistance training, these three numbers tell most of the story. If you performed three sets of eight repetitions with a certain weight, you now have a baseline for the next session.

Add notes only when they're useful

A short note can help when something affected the workout—for example, changing equipment, adjusting technique, or stopping a set early. You don't need to turn every workout into a diary.

Compare against yourself

Your previous performance is usually a more useful reference than what someone else is lifting. Look for gradual improvements in load, repetitions, technique, or consistency.

Why ProxyFit connects tracking to progression

ProxyFit is built around the same basic workout information, but adds a game layer so logging your training contributes to your Proxy's development. The tracker remains useful on its own; the additional progression gives you another reason to keep recording sessions.

Safety: increasing numbers is not worth sacrificing safe technique. Progress gradually and seek qualified instruction when you need help with exercise form.
